Hoi An is a tailor’s paradise and honestly one of the most exciting places I’ve ever shopped. The streets are lined with tailor shops where you can get anything made from flowy dresses to custom suits. It’s crazy that the turnaround is literally only 24 hours. Every time I would tell the tailors that I am in the town for six days so there’s no hurry whatsoever. Regardless everything would be ready the next day. Everything fit perfectly! I had so much fun picking fabrics, choosing styles, and watching my ideas come to life. The tailors are incredibly skilled and somehow know exactly how to make everything look good. It felt amazing to walk away with one-of-a-kind pieces made just for me and for a fraction of what it would cost back home!

What to see and do in Hoi An, Vietnam
(While you wait for your pieces to be made, you can wander through Hoi An’s charming streets, sip iced coffee by the river, or pop into local markets to browse handmade crafts and lanterns. It’s the perfect excuse to slow down, explore, and soak in the town’s easygoing vibe.)

Prepare your inspiration prior to your arrival
Pinterest will be your best friend! Gather reference images for what you want custom made. The clearer your vision, the easier it’ll be for the tailor to bring it to life. You can even show photos of styles you love, mix and match details, or tweak designs to make them uniquely yours.

How to get to Hoi An, Vietnam?
Hoi An is located in central Vietnam, about an hour from the nearest airport in Da Nang. You can easily get there using Grab (Asia’s version of Uber), which is super convenient. I actually took a motorbike from Hue, and it was such an incredible ride. I was able to wind through mountains, coastal roads, and little villages along the way. I highly recommend it if you want to soak in the scenery and make a few fun stops en route.
Now that you are in Hoi An…
Check out the shops that have premade linen clothes. The price will be significantly lower than getting the item custom made.
First shop to visit, trust me on this is ….. Shop Cát Tường
The owner has a large selection at very fair prices. I saw similar clothes at other stores being quoted to me at 5x the amount. I was in literal shock. I went back to Shop Cát Tường and bought more sets, shorts and tops. Absolutely the sweetest owners ever!

Walk around and enter multiple shops

There are soooo many stores side by side. Walk around with your reference photos and get quotes. This way you will find the outlier prices and determine right away who is overcharging and who is not. I tried reaching on social media and WhatsApp before my visit. I was able to get verification if a garment could be replicated, but I was never able to get a quote via message. Everybody would state that you have to come into the store.
Always bargain because the prices will be inflated.
If you want more bargain prices than I recommend checking out 41 Tailors. This shop is extremely busy, but they are consistent with their social media posting. I found out about them through Tik Tok, and they produce a range of different products.
For my more tailored shorts, I was a bit pickier about choosing the right tailor. I went with a shop that specialized in suits and paid close attention to the stitching and detail work in the seams. I did pay a little more, but I was very happy with my finished product from Custom Tailory Hoi An.
The process of getting custom made clothes tailored
The fun part after you select the which store will be making your pieces is defining the tiny details. You will be ushered to selection of fabric types, colors and more. The tailor always helps you decide which fabric is best off their experience.
The tailor will get your measurements. Typically, within 24 hours you will be asked to return. At the appointment you will try on your pieces, and they will be altered to fit how you would like. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you are dissatisfied.
A lot of stores will keep your measurements in their database. This way if you want something custom made, they can make it and then ship it to your home country. How amazing is that!

Getting custom made shoes

Shoes! Shoes! Shoes! I ordered two custom made shoes at two different stores. I came in with a reference photo, and the final product was slightly different, but I still loved it. In all fairness the reference photo I provided had very detailed seams. Keep this in mind for yourself.
Most stores have premade designs on display that can be adjusted to your size, and they’ll carefully measure both of your feet to get the perfect fit. An observation when I went through the process is that the shoe design in the store has been perfected by that store. I ended up loving the workmanship of the sporadic shoe purchase more than my reference option.
Here’s a small guide for reference:
I was being quoted close to $100 USD for boots. Sandals dependent on the design ranged from $20-$50 USD.
Do you want perhaps a custom-made leather jacket, bags, etc….
When I arrived in Hoi An I did not think I would leave the town with a leather jacket. For one the temperature in Vietnam is hot and humid even in rainy season. I love a good plot twist though. My red leather jacket is such a staple in my closet now.
However, not only can you get custom jackets, but you can also get bags, purses, gloves and so much more. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough room in my luggage or else I would have purchased more.
