What even is the air & water show?

Well, the Chicago Air and Water Show is one of the city’s most popular summer events that happens every year a weekend in August. It features thrilling aerial performances by military and civilian aircraft, as well as water stunts on Lake Michigan. Every year I forget about the show, and I am quickly reminded the week before when I hear the practices while sitting at my office job in Chicago.

Remember regardless of where you choose to watch the show bring sunscreen, snacks, and water if you plan to spend several hours. The show is usually from 10 am to 3 pm on a Saturday and Sunday.

The BEST and easiest accessible location to view the show is on North Avenue Beach

Yes, that’s right! The city of Chicago has not one, but multiple beaches. North Avenue beach is located right in the city overlooking Lake Michigan. Arrive early to secure a spot along the lakefront. This area offers the best close-up view of the aerial performances and water stunts.

If you don’t want to go to North Avenue because of crowds here are some other beaches to consider:
Oak Street Beach, ⚲ Ohio Street Beach, or ⚲ Fullerton Beach.

Take a boat tour or a lake cruise

Have you consider booking a boat tour or cruise on Lake Michigan to watch the Air and Water Show from the water? Some many companies offer special packages during the event, providing a unique and memorable experience with unobstructed views of the performances.

Do not make the mistake and book the popular tourist attraction of the architectural river boat tour. This tour goes through the city center on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan isn’t visible from here.

My favorite sky art is the heart. ❤️

Lincoln Park and the area near the Adler Planetarium also provide vantage points for viewing the Air and Water Show. These locations offer a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the crowded beaches.

Navy Pier is a popular waterfront attraction in Chicago where you can find a mix of entertainment, dining, shopping and the infamous ferris wheel. There are also a lot of outdoor restaurant patios where you can view the air and water show.

Check out rooftop bars and other tall buildings

While you won’t catch all the details of the performances, you can still enjoy the lively spectacle set against the stunning backdrop of the Chicago skyline. For an even better view, head up to the Skydeck at Willis Tower or the 360 Chicago Observation Deck at the John Hancock Building.

Helpful Tips for Planning your Trip to the USA

Book your Flight

Start by comparing airfare early to get the best deals.
Use tools like Skyscanner or Google Flights to track price trends and flexible travel dates.

Book your Accommodation

Whether you’re looking for hostels or boutique hotels the United States has a wide range of options.

Booking.com is great for hotels and guesthouses across the country.

Hostelworld is ideal for backpackers and budget travelers. Although be warned that the US doesn’t have that many options of hostels as other countries around the world.

Travel Insurance for the unexpected

Always, always have travel insurance! Travel insurance is essential. It protects you from unexpected events like flight delays, illness, theft, or accidents.
I recommend SafetyWing, which offers flexible and affordable plans perfect for long-term travelers and digital nomads.

Best Resources to book Tours and Activities

GetYourGuide is great for booking everything from city tours and museum tickets to outdoor adventures. It’s easy to use, has tons of reviews, clear pricing, and offers free cancellation on most bookings.
