General Information about Uganda
Language
English is the official language and widely used in government, schools, and tourism.
Transportation
Taxis are available but not metered so always agree on a price beforehand.
SafeBoda and Bolt are popular apps for car and motorcycle taxi rides in major cities.
Renting a 4×4 is common for those exploring national parks or rural areas. Roads vary in condition; some rural routes require a sturdy vehicle.
Currency
Ugandan Shilling UGX
Bring USD for currency exchanges. Make sure the bill is in perfect condition as in no tears, writing, and etc. Make sure the bill is dated year 2010 and onward.
Always have cash on you! Make sure to have small notes as some vendors may not have enough change. Larger restaurants/cafe take credit cards. However, this is always dependent on the power. Many restaurants have a card machine, but sometimes the machine will decline due to the connection.
Download the XE app to have the current exchange rate. Best app by far. You don’t need signal if currency downloaded beforehand. It’s useful when bargaining in the markets.
Travel Guides for Uganda
What to pack for Uganda
When packing for Uganda, bring lightweight, breathable clothing for warm days, but also include a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings or higher elevations. Long sleeves and pants are helpful for sun protection and to guard against mosquitoes, especially in the evenings. If you’re heading on safari or into the bush, neutral-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sturdy walking shoes are essential. Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, basic toiletries, and any personal medications. A rain jacket is also a good idea, especially during the wet seasons!
