How to get to León
The main international airport in Nicaragua is Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA), located in Managua, the capital city. From MGA Airport located 2 hours away from León, the most common and easiest mode of transportation is taking a shuttle. You can book your shuttle through the Bigfoot hostel or use the tourist shuttle from Gekko Travel Explorer. I landed at an awkward time, so I debated what to do. In the end, I slept at the airport and then took the 6 am shuttle. If you want to use public transport, then take a taxi to the university bus stop and then commute to León via chicken bus. These buses are inexpensive but may be crowded and take longer due to multiple stops.
Go Volcano Boarding down Cerro Negro

Most people choose to come to come to León to check off volcano boarding off their bucket list and I was no exception. Volcano boarding down Cerro Negro offers an adrenaline-pumping adventure that starts off with a 1 hour hike. Once at the summit, you will descend on a sturdy board down the ash-covered slopes, reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. There are two companies that guide these tours, the original company Bigfoot Hostel, or you can book your experience through GetYourGuide. Read all about my experience volcano boarding here.
Walking Tour with Guru Walk
There is so much history in León and Nicaragua in general and this was absolutely one of my favorite walking tours. As you stroll through the colonial streets, you’ll encounter architectural gems such as the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of León, adorned with intricate designs and steeped in centuries of tradition.
Book your tour through guruwalk.com
Go Museum Hopping
You should try museum hopping in León for an exhilarating blend of cultural exploration and adventure, immersing yourself in the vibrant history and diverse artistry of the city’s museums.
Museo de Revolucion

The building is in the center of town, and the entrance ticket includes a guided tour (available in Spanish or English). The guided tour focuses on Nicaraguan history and follows along the photographs found in two rooms of the building. Not a bad deal for only $2 USD. At the end of the tour, you will get a panoramic view of the city from the rooftop. However, huge warning about the rooftop- it’s essentially metal sheets with holes everywhere. You will have to watch your step and follow the spray-painted arrows for directions.
Ortíz Gurdián Foundation Art Center
Picasso, picasso, picasso! I have never seen so much Picasso pieces in one spot. The art museum is split into two buildings and features a lot of artwork from various Latin artists. Admission is $3 USD.

Take in the views from the church’s bell tower
Right in the center of the town square is Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Views from the church’s bell tower offer a breathtaking panorama, providing a unique vantage point to admire the cityscape, and inviting contemplation and reflection amidst the timeless beauty of the surrounding volcanic landscape. There isn’t many tall buildings so your view is unblocked.
Hike four volcanoes in the area
Nicaragua has so many volcanoes everywhere. Here are the closets option to the city of León:
- Telica Volcano: This is one of the most accessible volcanoes near Leon. It’s known for its active crater and stunning views. The hike usually takes a few hours and is moderately challenging.
- Cerro Negro: Although not a traditional cone-shaped volcano, Cerro Negro is famous for its black volcanic ash slopes. It’s relatively easy to climb and offers exhilarating views from the top. This is the volcano that if you do volcano boarding, will be the one you slide down.
- Momotombo Volcano: Located further from Leon, Momotombo is a stratovolcano known for its perfect cone shape. The hike is more challenging and typically requires a full day due to the distance and elevation gain.
- San Cristobal Volcano: This is the highest volcano in Nicaragua and is located a bit farther from Leon. It’s an active volcano and the hike can be demanding, often requiring a guided tour.
Before embarking on any of these hikes, it’s advisable to check current conditions, especially if you plan to hike an active volcano like Telica or San Cristobal. Local tour operators in León can arrange guided hikes to ensure safety and provide insightful information about the volcanoes and the surrounding area.
