One of the best decisions I made was to book accommodation close to Kuang Si waterfalls. Complete disclaimer: It wasn’t a luxurious option. It did not have all the bells and whistles that you would encounter in a high end hotel. At this point I had been staying in hostels for multiple weeks so for me personally at the time it was like I was treating myself. The main selling point of this guesthouse is the location and its proximity to Kuang Si Waterfalls.
Location
The guesthouse isn’t the easiest to locate. I attached the Google Maps coordinates, but be warned that the GPS doesn’t lead you directly to it. If you ask a local they will be able to help you too. It’s a minute by foot from the main road that leads you to Kuang Si Falls. You will turn right onto a dirt road. You will follow that road to a parking lot and then there to the right will be a small wooden bridge on the property that leads you to the accommodation.
Different ways to get here from Luang Prabang:
- Self Drive by Motorbike Rental: It’s a 40 minute drive on a pavement road. If you’re comfortable riding a motorbike, you can rent one in Luang Prabang. I recommend renting from Anousay Motorbike Rental. This option gives you freedom and flexibility, but make sure you have a valid international driver’s license and adhere to local traffic regulations.
- Songthaews: Every songthaew in town is heading towards the falls between 8 am and noon. Look for shared songthaews (converted pickup trucks with bench seating) that depart from the main bus station or various points in Luang Prabang town center. These are often cheaper than hiring a private taxi.
- Taxi: You can hire a taxi from Luang Prabang town to take you directly to Kuang Si Falls. This is a convenient option if you want direct transportation and flexibility with your schedule. Negotiate the price with the driver before starting your journey.
Free Waterfall
On the guesthouse property there’s a FREE waterfall. You can go for a swim here or even enjoy breakfast by the waterfall from the patio.
Skip the crowds
The main entrance to the Kuang Si waterfall is within a 5 minute walking distance. All tourist attractions draw in crowds. If you book your visit to Kuang Si Falls through a tour company not only will you pay a little more for convenience, but you will be at the falls at the same time as all the other companies. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s ultimately a personal preference. I always enjoy being at a popular tourist attraction outside of the peak times. Selfishly I want to experience it all to myself so I enjoyed having my accommodation right next door. I went right at opening.
Guesthouse overview
The accommodation itself was basic. There is no reception counter, so you will need to find staff on the premises. The shower was a simple handheld attachment that was right next to the toilet. There is no internet and no AC. Definitely expect bugs as you’re in the jungle.
Remember to bring food or snacks with you since the town caters to the tour groups that visit from around 8 am to 5 pm. Outside of those hours all the restaurants will be closed.
Based on my personal experience, I enjoyed my stay here even if it was just for one night. You can’t beat it! You are surrounded my nature with a free waterfall at your doorstep. The accommodation is basic, but the biggest perk is the proximity to the waterfalls. I used Agoda.com to book the guesthouse. It’s called Vanvisa at the falls. At the time I tried to price compare on other websites, but it looks like they only advertise here.
